Anyone with a fascination for the Second World War years will relish this 56-page guide, originally published by His Majesty's Stationery Office in January 1939, to the ways ‘in which the people of this Country may give service’.

Reproduced from the collection of the National Archives, the guide was sent to every household in Britain and detailed the many ways men and women could give service to their country in peace time, from joining the Auxiliary Fire Service to becoming a member of the Women’s Land Army.

Included in the guide is a letter from Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and a foreword by Sir John Anderson MP urging ‘our one wish is to live at peace ... but if this is to be fulfilled we must be up and doing’. On the outbreak of war on 3rd September 1939, National ‘War Service’ became mandatory. After 1948, ‘War Service’ was replaced by the National Service Act, which saw a generation of young men get a taste of the military.
